Meet Your New History Teacher, Beyoncé
Charlottesville, VA 22903 United States
Music from Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar has sparked public conversation about American historical legacies. But that shouldn’t be a surprise. American popular music traditions — from jazz and blues to country, hip-hop, and electronic dance music — have always been intertwined with our nation’s history and politics. This roundtable will explore the place of pop music in American life, historically and today. Some of the nation’s top music scholars and critics will discuss how pop music engages with politics, identity, education, commerce, and art. Join us as we reflect on and celebrate how America’s music defines its culture.
Following this event, a book signing will be held with featured speakers and books will be available for purchase at the venue through the UVA Bookstore.
