Emily Lordi

Emily Lordi writes and teaches about African American literature and black popular music at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She received her PhD from Columbia University in 2009, then worked as a visiting assistant professor at Cornell for two years before joining the UMass English Department in 2011.

She is the author of two books: Black Resonance: Iconic Women Singers and African American Literature and the forthcoming Donny Hathaway Live. She has also published articles and book chapters on topics ranging from literary modernism to neo-soul music, and is currently writing a musical-literary history of the concept of “soul.” Her music reviews and other works of cultural criticism appear on such sites as New Black ManThe Feminist WirePitchfork, the Root, and the Los Angeles Review of Books.
